Barbara Sox.....
The Craftsman and the Peddler Baskets

During the 1980's,
Barbara Chapman Sox
was introduced to the traditional style of basket
making at a Regional Home Extension Workshop. Hooked, she continued to study basketry through
the Watauga County Community School program and attended Penland School of Crafts during the summer
of 1985. At Penland, she explored the various types of materials and the infinite possibilities
and styles of basket making. Mrs. Sox took her study of basketry even further by pursuing a Bachelor
of Science Degree at Appalachian State University in Industrial Technology with a Concentration in
Crafts. In 1996, She retired from her full time job as a Public Dental Hygienist and decided to
make baskets as her second career. In 2001, she studied with Flo Hoope at Arromount Craft School.
More recently, she has developed her own signature style of basket making.
A quick glimpse of her work reveals that Mrs. Sox believes any kind of material can be used in a
basket, as long as it fits the style of the basket. Woven into her creations are feathers, shells,
hand-made papers, and scraps of wood given to her by her friends. She doesn't have to rely only on
the kindness of friends for materials. Any given clear day might find her wandering in the woods
near her home in search of materials like grapevine, Dutchman's Pipe, honeysuckle, walnuts and roots
to be used for dies and basket handles. Many of her creative ideas and one of a kind designs come
to her while she is walking in the woods or carrying out her daily activities. Other designs, such
as her leather formed baskets or her Prayer Feather Basket, come to her in dreams. Some of her
specialty baskets include offertory baskets for churches, wedding baskets, and one of a kind bark baskets.
Basketry is an ancient craft passed down from generation to generation and has historically been
considered women's work. Barbara has definitely passed her craft down to subsequent generations,
but not just the women in the family; she taught both her son and daughter how to make baskets.
These days, you can frequently find her grandchildren sitting by her side soaking basket reed and
helping to weave a basket. Because it is the handwork of an individual and not a machine made
product, Barbara is determined to do her part and not allow basket making to become a lost art.
To pass the art down, she has taken the time to share her knowledge by teaching the craft to her
friends, neighbors and their children through a craft enrichment program at Appalachian State University.
Barbara's traditional, contemporary, and one-of-a-kind baskets are well known in the area, and several
of her baskets have been purchased as gifts to go as far as Alaska and Ireland. She has been recognized
for her artistry in many invitational and jury exhibitions both locally and regionally. Barbara works
out of the studio in her home, participates in local art sale shows, accepts commissions, and teaches
workshops on request. She shows and sells her work at Hands Gallery, 543 West King Street, Boone,
North Carolina and at Main Street Gallery, Blowing Rock, North Carolina.
